Abstract
The Kaohsiung Refinery of the CPC Corporation has long been known as the CPC’s oil refinery division in southern Taiwan. It was not only closely related to the development of Taiwan’s energy economy and associated industries, but also a major target challenged by the environmental protection movement in Taiwan 30 years ago. After being decommissioned in 2015, the Kaohsiung Refinery has entered a new phase in the transformation of industry and urban space. The predecessor of the Kaohsiung Refinery was the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Sixth Fuel Factory that was one of the most important military production bases connected with the Japanese naval strategy. The living space adjacent to the factory has also affected the landscape at the foot of Mount Banping and the development of Nanzih District. Since its establishment in 1940, the dormitory area has born testimony to the history and spatial change of the Sixth Fuel Factory over the past 80 years. The dormitory area has also become an experiment on industrial accommodation space. This article is a preliminary study on the architectural style of the factory’s dormitory area, which will proceed through systematic comparison between field observations and historical documents, thereby facilitating the reading of this historic site
